KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team swept its first doubleheader of the 2015 dual match season, pulling out a 4-3 win over the IPFW Mastodons in the early match and racing past the UW-Green Bay Phoenix for a 5-2 victory in the nightcap. With the wins the Broncos improve to 4-3 on the season. WMU will play its first Mid-American Conference match of the season on Sunday when they host Binghamton to wrap the weekend.
Matt Hamilton went 3-0 on the day by being the only Bronco to win both of his singles matches as well as a doubles match, teaming with Stephen Payne to help WMU clinch the doubles point in both of their matches. Jimmy Beckwith also went undefeated in doubles play, teaming with both Marc Shideler and Jefta Kecic to record wins.The Broncos dropped just one doubles match on the day. Hamilton was the only Bronco go win two singles matches on the afternoon, as well.
The day began with the win over the Mastodons, with the doubles pairing of Beckwith and Shideler strking first with a 6-4 win over Karl Wangensten-Oye and Connor Andrews at the No. 3 doubles position. Maik Steiner and Ruben Greiner finished things up shortly thereafter, beating the Mastodons' top doubles pairing of Gerard Guell and Martin Muadi by an identical score to take the doubles point for the Broncos.
Steiner was the first singles player off the court, blowing past Guell 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 1 position to put his team ahead 2-0. IPFW countered with wins at Nos. 2 and 5 singles to tie the team match up at two points apiece, but Pablo Mora snapped the tie with a three-set win over Andrews at No. 6 to move the Broncos ahead 3-2. Hamilton clinched the team win for the Broncos just before the Mastodons could truly put it in doubt, beating Daniel Cardenas 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 3 singles spot for WMU's fourth point of the match.
The match against the Phoenix started out much in the same way, with Payne and Hamilton securing a 6-1 win over Green Bay's Howard Scott and Florian Kraenzler for the first doubles win of the session. Beckwith and Kecic provided the clincher from the No. 3 doubles spot, beating Joey Leto and Marius Merz 6-4 to put the Broncos ahead 1-0 in the team match. The Broncos raced out quickly and singles and clinched the team win before the Phoenix could put a single point on the board, starting with a 6-4, 6-3 win by Ruben Greiner over Howard Scott at the No. 3 spot. Hamilton posted a 6-2, 7-5 decision over Josh Schramm at No. 4 to make the score 3-0, and Beckwith survived a first-set tiebreaker with Jorge Soler to win 7-6 (7), 6-2 at No. 6 to clinch the team win. Kecic rounded out the scoring for WMU with a three-set victory at No. 1 singles over Michael Tenzer, winning 6-7 (3), 7-5, 1-0 (7) to make it a 5-2 final score.
