Chaney's Double Lifts WMU Over Buffalo, 2-1

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Rachel Chaney netted two goals as the Western Michigan women's soccer team remained undefeated at home this season after a 2-1 win over Buffalo at the WMU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Both of Chaney's goals were set up by Aubrey Sudomier in the win . Chaney led all Broncos (9-4-4, 7-1-2 MAC) with two shots on goal and Michelle Watson made two saves in goal. Overall Western Michigan outshot Buffalo 10-7 on the day, landing six of them on goal.

After controlling play in the first portion of the first half Sudomier laid a long cross into the box and Chaney was there to kick it in at the far post for her sixth of the season in the 27th minute.

The two connected again in the 64th minute in similar fashion. Sudomier headed down the right side of the field and lofted a cross to the far post. This time Chaney rose above a Buffalo defender and headed it off the post and into the net to complete her double.

“Aubrey and Rachel were tremendous today and all weekend for us,” said head coach Nate Norman. “I thought for the most part we played a good game today. Buffalo is a tough and physical team and they took us out of our rhythm on a few occasions. We did a good job finishing our chances.”

Buffalo added a goal with just 1:21 remaining in the game off of a corner kick. Sophie Terrien lobbed the ball into the box and it was deflected a few times before Courtney Mann tapped it in from close range to cut the lead to 2-1. The Broncos were able to hold possession in the final minute to secure the win.

Chaney and Sudomier combined for all five goals on the weekend. Sudomier had two goals in WMU's 3-0 win over Akron on Friday and Chaney also had a tally in the win.

Western Michigan closes out the regular season with a crucial match against Eastern Michigan on Thursday at 1 p.m. at the WMU Soccer Complex. Western Michigan needs to win or tie to secure the MAC West title heading into the MAC Tournament, which the Broncos have already qualified.
