Gold Takes Game One of Western Michigan Fall Baseball Series, 12-1

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Gold stormed to a 12-1 victory in Game One of the annual Western Michigan baseball fall intrasquad series this past Friday at Robert J. Bobb Stadium. Game Two will be played Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 3 p.m., and the series will conclude with Game Three Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m.

Gold broke open a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the third. Senior second baseman Theo Piccirilli got his side going with an RBI double deep to left center, scoring Jordan Tillman from first. Gold went on to open a 6-0 advantage with four runs in the top of the fourth and led 8-1 through five innings. The game was called at the end of the sixth after Gold put up four more runs in the top of the inning.

Brown scored its only run in the bottom of the fourth. Grant Miller reached on a one-out single and with two away, Brett Sunde and Brandon Cable (RBI) each produced base hits.

Gold totaled 12 hits to Brown's four. Piccirilli finished 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Drew Farmer went 2-for-4 and blasted a two-run double in the fifth. Andrew Sohn (2-for-3) and Caleb Caton (2-for-2) had two hits and drove in one run apiece. Sohn also had the game's only stolen base. Freshman Nate Schneider hit a two-run single in the sixth.

Senior southpaw Steve Laudicina started the game on the mound for the Gold. He struck out three, allowed just one hit and did not issue a walk over three innings. David Brennan tossed two innings of relief and was charged with the run on the three hits in the fourth. Patrick Borlik threw a final hitless inning.

Junior transfer and JUCO All-American Chad Mayle got the start for Brown. He surrendered three runs and five hits over 3.2 innings. Mayle walked four and struck out two. Pat Haynes, Matt Nestor, Keegan Akin and Gabe Berman all appeared out of the bullpen.

Gold was coached by assistant coaches Adam Piotrowicz and Ryan Cypret. Brown was led by head coach Billy Gernon and associate head coach Blaine McFerrin.
