STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - WMU golf cards its lowest team round of the young season (306) to finish day one of the 2013 Nittany Lion Women's Invitational in a four-way tie for eighth place.
The Broncos were paced by a pair of underclassmen. Emma Salata fired the lowest opening round and single round in general of her career, carding a 2-over par 74 on Friday. She was matched by the effort of freshman Anna Wilcoxson, competing in her first collegiate event.
Kaitlyn Watkins, competing in only her second event as a Bronco, shaved three strokes off her best round at the Mary Fossum Invitational by carding a 4-over par 76. Salata and Wilcoxson sit in a tie for 15th, while Watkins is tied for 26th.
Competing as an individual, Chloe Lawrie carded the second lowest round of the day among the Broncos, shooting a 3-over par 75 to sit in a tie for 21st.
Yale is the team leader after day one at 1-over par (289). Penn State, the tournament host, is four strokes back at 293. No. 23 Kent State is one shot out of second at 294. Georgetown and Longwood round out the top five at 302 each. Western Michigan is tied with Columbi, William & Mary and Mid-American Conference counterpart Eastern Michigan.
Penn State's Christina Vosters leads Kent State's Jennifer Ha by a stroke after carding an opening-round 69 (-3). Yale's Elisabeth Bernabe and KSU's Josee Doyon are tied for third at 71 (-1).
The field will play the second round on Saturday by tee times beginning at 9 a.m. with the final round taking place on Sunday with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. as well.
