Former Michigan men’s gymnastics standout Ralph Rosso joined the Western Michigan staff as an assistant coach in September 2013. Rosso comes to WMU from the University of Arkansas, where he was a manager for the women’s gymnastics team while completing a master’s degree.

Rosso lettered on the men’s gymnastics team at Michigan from 2006-09, helping the Wolverines win the Big Ten title in 2009. As a Wolverine, Rosso competed in four Big 10 Championships and four NCAA Championships. He was a still rings event finalist at the 2007 NCAA Championships, placing ninth. He advanced to the individual finals at the Big 10 Championships four times on three different events (2009, floor exercise and still rings; 2007, pommel horse and still rings).

Rosso began his coaching career at Michigan on the men’s side, where he was a volunteer assistant under current head coach Kurt Golder during the 2010 and 2011 seasons. During Rosso’s time on staff, the Wolverines produced three NCAA national champions, five Big Ten champions and 18 All-Americans. While in Ann Arbor, Rosso also worked alongside Xiao Yuan, former coach of Olympic champion Li Xiaopeng.

The past two seasons, Rosso worked with the Arkansas women’s program, where was responsible for equipment, as well as spotting during skills and drills. The Razorbacks placed sixth in the country in 2012 and 10th at the NCAA Championships in 2013, producing five All-Americans and an SEC Gymnast of the Year in that span. He additionally coached numerous gymnastics camps and club gyms while at Arkansas.

Outside of collegiate gymnastics, Rosso has experience working as a gymnastics instructor and supervisor at U-M youth camps, as a boys’ program coach at Gym America from 2009-11, and as an instructor at the International Gymnastics Camp in 2006, at Monmouth Gymnastics in 2005 and at Surgent’s Elite from 2003-05.

The University of Michigan’s Newt Loken scholarship award winner in 2007, Rosso earned his bachelor’s in general studies in 2009 and received a master’s in recreation and sports management from Arkansas in 2013. He is a 2005 graduate of St. John Vianney High School in Holmdel, N.J.
