Hockey Announces Non-Conference Schedule

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Three regular season tournaments highlight the 2013-14 Western Michigan hockey non-conference schedule released on Tuesday afternoon by head coach Andy Murray.

WMU will take part in the Brice Alaska Goal Rush, Notre Dame's Shillelagh Tournament and the Great Lakes Invitational this coming season. The Broncos also have home-and-home series with the Fighting Irish and Michigan State and host Northern Michigan to round out their 12-game non-conference slate.

Western Michigan opens the 2013-14 campaign hosting Western Ontario on Oct. 5 and then opens the regular season at Notre Dame on Oct. 11. The Broncos host the Fighting Irish the following night for their home-opener at 7:05 p.m.

The first tournament will pit WMU against Alaska-Anchorage and Alaska-Fairbanks in Fairbanks on Oct. 18 and 19. The Seawolves and the Broncos open up the tournament with a 9:07 p.m. EST start.

WMU hosts its lone two-game non-conference home-stand against Northern Michigan on Nov. 9 and 10. Saturday's game is slated for the usual 7:05 p.m. start but Sunday's game time is still to be determined.

Notre Dame will also host Western Michigan during the Thanksgiving weekend for the Shillelagh Tournament on Nov. 29 and 30. In addition to WMU and UND, Alabama-Huntsville and Northeastern will also be a part of the tournament.

The Broncos end their non-conference season with their second-straight appearance in the Great Lakes Invitational. The 2013 GLI will take place outdoors at Comerica Park as a part of the NHL's Winter Classic that will be played by the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings at Michigan Stadium.
