Chippewas Slip By Western Michigan in Game Two, 5-3

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan carried a lead through seven innings but close out the win, falling to Central Michigan in 10 innings in game two of the rivalry series, 5-3.

Western Michigan (16-37, 8-18 MAC) struck first Friday with a run in the bottom of the first. Theo Piccirilli rapped a leadoff single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single to left field by Brett Sunde.

The Broncos tacked two runs onto their total in the fifth to stretch the lead to 3-0. The first run was scored without a hit, as Vinnie Booker was plunked by a pitch and made his way to third after a sac bunt and a balk. He scored on a fielder's choice by Jared Kujawa. Kujawa also moved up a base on a balk and crossed the plate after back-to-back two-out singles by Sunde and Steve Buglione.

WMU starting pitcher Derek Schneider had his best outing of the season, keeping Central Michigan off the scoreboard until the seventh. He scattered six hits and set career highs with six innings pitched and four strikeouts.

Central Michigan's Neal Jacobs tied the game in the eighth inning with a two-run homer to left field.

The Chippewas (24-30, 11-15 MAC) took their first lead of the day in the top of the 10th, hitting back-to-back leadoff doubles off of reliever Nick Bradley. CMU added an insurance run in the 10th for a 5-3 victory.

Jacobs had a day for Central Michigan, going 4-for-4 with the home run, a double and a pair of singles.

Bradley (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Western Michigan. Jimmy McNamara (1-0) earned the win in relief, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings, and Matt Trowbridge picked up his ninth save of the season, recording the final out.

Both teams had 11 hits in the game. Sunde, Buglione and Patrick Duncan each went 2-for-5 at the plate for Western Michigan.

The Broncos close out the 2013 season tomorrow with the series finale against Central Michigan at 1 p.m. WMU will honor its five seniors - Kory Bauswell, Chris Bossenbery, Patrick Duncan, Casey Hall and Mike Moyer prior to the game.
