BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Western Michigan softball team takes part in its second
tournament of the 2013 season when the Broncos travel to Bowling Green, Ky.,
for the Holiday Inn Hilltopper Classic hosted by Western Kentucky
University.
This is the first time WMU will play in the tournament, in
its sixth year of existence and only its second with Holiday Inn as the
presenting sponsor.
Other teams making an appearance this weekend are Dayton,
Pittsburgh, Western Kentucky, South Dakota State and 2012 NCAA tournament
participant Valparaiso.
The season records will make for even match-ups this
weekend. After playing in four games Western Kentucky has two wins, Valparaiso
has tallied two wins and one loss, Pittsburgh has tallied one win and four
losses, while Dayton is winless after playing in five games this season.
South Dakota State stands alone with four wins after playing
in 10 games this season. The Broncos
have a record of 1-5 so far this season; tallying losses to top ranked teams
No. 5/6 Oregon and No. 4 Arizona State.
WMU's one win (3-2) comes from an extra-inning game versus
Cal Poly (2/8) at the Kajikawa Classic.
The freshmen have continued their standout performance with
Melissa Palmer, Sabrina Gamboa and Caity Pixley having started and played in
all games. Along with 26 combined starts freshmen players Marleen Rodriguez and
Palmer hold the top batting averages on the team; Palmer boasting a .450 and
Rodriguez with .364.
The Broncos will take on Dayton for the first game of the
tournament at 12 p.m. CT on Friday at Buchanan Park. There will be live stats for all games
throughout the weekend.
