KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's tennis team recovered from slow starts in two doubles matches to lock down the doubles point, and followed with a dominating effort in the singles session as the Broncos defeated Detroit 6-1 in the 2013 season opener. With the win, the Broncos improve to 1-0 on the season.
The doubles pairing of Ruben Greiner - a mid-season addition making his Bronco debut - and Ross VanderPloeg opened doubles play strong with an 8-4 win in the No. 2 match, but the Nos. 1 and 3 matches each required comeback efforts. Greiner later went on to earn his first career singles victory as well, beating Chris Cheung 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 3 singles match to clinch the team victory for the Broncos.
Greiner was not the only Bronco to win his debut effort, though; Pablo Mora also donned the Brown and Gold for the first time in his career, and he was part of one of two comeback efforts in doubles play. The pairing of Mora and Marc Shideler were the first of those teams to bounce back, defeating the Titans' Jay Joshi and Rafael Orantes 8-7 (3) in the No. 3 doubles match. The other doubles pairing to survive a tight doubles match was Nadin Indre and Stephen Payne, who held off Mike Basha and Alex Latosinsky 8-7 (3) in the No. 1 doubles match.
Freshman Andrew Cahn was perfect in his dual match debut, defeating Larry Brown 6-0, 6-0 in a quick match, and Mora was just near-perfect in his singles debut, defeating Orantes 6-0, 6-1. Aaron Wong earned an impressive win over Detroit's Jay Joshi, downing him 6-4, 6-1, and Indre rounded out the effort with a 6-3, 6-2 drubbing of Basha in the No. 2 singles match.
