KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Three singles players advanced to the semifinals of their respective draws, and the Western Michigan women's tennis team completed its first day of competition at the WMU Super Challenge, hosted at West Hills Athletic Club.  Play will resume on Saturday morning with a mix of doubles and singles play.

The Broncos had a strong day in singles action, with three different players advancing to the semifinals of their respective singles draws.  Junior Kathleen Hawkins earned an impressive Big Ten win in her opening singles match, defeating Indiana's Alecia Kauss by a score of 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles draw.  Hawkins will face DePaul's Jasmin Kling in the semifinals of the draw on Saturday.

Freshman Kelsey King also advanced to the semifinals of her draw with a victory on Friday, beating Notre Dame's Darby Mountford handily in the opening round of the No. 7 singles draw.  King completed a quick victory against Mountford, dispatching her 6-1, 6-0 to reach the semifinals of the draw.  King will face Iowa State's Emma Waites on Saturday.

The third Bronco to advance to the semifinals her draw was Nini Sujashvili, who moved up in the No. 3 singles draw.  Sujashvili advanced in the tournament due to a withdrawal, but went on to earn a hard-fought victory anyway on Friday, defeating Louisville's Valentina Schneider.  Sujashvili kept Schneider at bay for much of the match, defeating her 6-1, 6-1.  Sujashvili is slated to compete against DePaul's Ana Vladutu on Saturday.

In other action, the doubles pairing of King and Maggie Remynse earned a victory in the back draw of the No. 4 doubles bracket, defeating Bowling Green's Mary Hill and Katie Brozovich 8-6.
