Dr. Lynda McLean never considered being in the WMU Athletic
Hall of Fame, but this Friday her hard work and dedication will be recognized
when she is inducted as a member of the Class of 2012.
McLean, an Ontario native, played volleyball for Western Michigan
University from 1984-87. During her time as a Bronco volleyball player, the
team won four Mid-American Conference championships, while remaining undefeated
in conference play.
"It was very exciting to be a part of that," McLean
said. "I was very proud to be able to represent WMU while we remained the team
to beat those four years."
McLean carried her competitive drive off the court,
channeling it into her coursework. The life of a student-athlete was
challenging, but she felt she was well supported.
"Even though I always had my nose in a book, it took a great
deal of support from classmates and professors, combined with my own effort to
maintain the life of a student athlete. I think that is why I am so proud of my
academic awards."
McLean personally earned numerous academic awards: First
Team Academic All-MAC (1985-87), GTE Academic All-American (1987), GTE Academic
All-District (1986-87), Presidential Scholar (1987) and top female scholar
athlete at WMU (1987-88).
This weekend marks an award that McLean finds heartwarming
and proud to receive. She is one of six inductees who will be inducted into the
WMU Athletic Hall of Fame this Friday, and honored at the football game on
Saturday.
"It feels really nice to be remembered. I had amazing fun being
part of it all during those four years. This award brings back fond memories
for me," McLean said.
McLean feels she owes her success in life to her days as a
student-athlete. After Western Michigan, McLean attended medical school and
moved back to Ontario. She spends her time with her family and coaching
volleyball. McLean believes she must pass on her passion because of the success
and happiness it has provided her.
"I look at what I have been able to do and there is no doubt
it has been because I was a student athlete at WMU. For which reason I have a lot
to give back."
