This Week
The Western Michigan volleyball team will look to gain separation from the rest of the pack as they travel to take on the Kent State Golden Flashes and the Ohio Bobcats on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
This will be the 45th meeting between the Broncos and the Golden Flashes, with WMU holding a 34-11 advantage in the all-time series and a 12-9 advantage in Kent. The Broncos are 5-2 against Kent State under Colleen Munson, including wins in the last four meetings; the Broncos have not lost to the Golden Flashes since the 2007 season, and have not dropped a set to Kent State since a 3-1 win in 2009.
This will be the 49th meeting between the Broncos and the Bobcats, with WMU holding a 30-17-1 advantage in the all-time series and a 14-8-1 advantage in Athens. The Broncos are 4-6 against the Bobcats under Munson, but have won each of the last two meetings, including a 3-0 sweep in Athens in 2010. In fact, the Broncos did not drop a set to the Bobcats in either of the last two meetings.
Oliver Among the Elite
Lena Oliver became just the second player in program history to reach 1,700 career digs this past weekend, recording 21 digs in the Broncos’ 3-0 win over Buffalo. Oliver ranks second on the career digs list at Western Michigan, trailing just Caitlin Strimel.
Two Way Player
Terin Norris set a team record with 18 Assists-Digs double-doubles in 2011, and appears to be off to the same kind of start in 2012. Norris has recorded 10 double-doubles already in 2012, most recently against Akron on Oct. 12.
Top Five - Go!
Jessica Brown passed Katie Eberling for fifth on the career kills list at Western Michigan, and now has 1,381 career kills; she needs seven more to pass WMU Hall of Famer Sarah Powers for fourth on the list. Should Brown record 43 more kills, she will pass Stefanie Rotunno for third.
So Money, You Don’t Even Know
Ali Gossen decided to double down against the Akron Zips last weekend, recording her first double-double since the second weekend of the season. Gossen notched 12 kills and 10 digs for her second double-double of the year.
Feasting on the MAC
Richelle Ranney ranks second in the MAC with a .364 hitting percentage in MAC matches, and leads the Broncos with a 2.86 kills/set average in conference play as well. Ranney’s averages are buoyed by a sterling performance against Akron on October 12, when the sophomore recorded a career-high 20 kills in the Broncos’ 3-1 victory.
