Broncos Draw Defending Champs to Open MAC Play

KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team opened up Mid-American Conference play tying the defending MAC Champions Toledo, 0-0, at the WMU Soccer complex on a rainy Friday afternoon.

Shots were even with the two teams eaching firing off 11, but the Broncos had an advantage in shots on goal with four to Toledo's two. Michelle Watson made two saves to earn WMU's first shutout of the season.

“It was a hard fought game that both teams had quality chances in,” said head coach Nate Norman. “We have to do a better job of taking our opportunities and limiting our opponents.”

The Bronco defense held the Rockets to just one shot in the first half, a wide blast from about 30 yards out towards the end of the first half. One of WMU's best chances on net with minutes remaining in the first half when Diana Dedvukaj played a through-ball to Aubrey Sudomier down the right side of the box. The sophomore forward went in on goal but the shot was saved by Toledo keeper Kelsey Borowitz.

WMU had another solid chance at the end of the second period when a cross by Sudomier was bobbled by Borowitz and right to Rachel Chaney. Chaney fired from about six yards out but a Rocket defender stepped in to make the save.

Western Michigan heads to Northern Illinois for their first MAC road trip of the season with a 2 p.m. start on Sunday.
