KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Freshman
Andrew Cahn posted a perfect 3-0 day for the Western Michigan men's tennis team, and the Broncos received performances from the freshman class as the second day of the 2012 Jack Vredevelt Invite came to a close. The tournament will conclude with play on Sunday, September 16.
Cahn was the leading winner for the Broncos on Saturday, going 3-0 with a doubles victory in the morning and a pair of singles wins later in the afternoon. He began the day by teaming with Marc Shideler to down Matt Kuelker and Nolan Marks of Cleveland State by a score of 8-3, and would immediately follow that with a marathon three-set win over Notre Dame's Doug Barnard in singles. Cahn recovered from a lost first set to overcome Barnard, winning a wild third set to take the match 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (11). Cahn would wrap his day with a quick win over Illinois State's Michael Sellitto, taking the match 6-0, 6-2.
Cahn was not the only freshmen to win multiple matches on Saturday. Michael Treis defeated ISU's Muddappa Appanervanda 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (3), and Jim Beckwith defeated UW-Green Bay's Gary Notkin 6-1, 6-1. The duo of Treis and Beckwith also teamed up for a doubles win, defeating Cleveland State's Joe VanMeter and Matt Ford 8-6. Freshman Stephen Payne also earned a win on the day, defeating Xavier's Brian Carman 6-3, 6-2. Rounding out the victors on the day was Ross VanderPloeg, who recovered from a slow start to the day with a rousing 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (9) victory over Illinois State's Alex Pelaez.
