NORMAL, Ill. -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team extended its winning streak to four games after the Broncos grounded the Illinois State RedBirds, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.

The Bronco back line was able to shut down All-American Rachel Tejada, who had eight goals in five games coming into Sunday's showdown. The RedBirds star sophomore forward was held to just two shots on the day, neither of which landed on goal.

“We made sure when she got the ball we pressured her,” said head coach Nate Norman on his game plan to limit Tejada. “We did a great job of not allowing her to turn.

WMU's Rachel Chaney scored two goals in the span of three minutes in the second half to tie the game and then give the Broncos the win.

The Broncos (4-1-0) trailed in the first half after Sarah Mussallem punched in a goal off of a rebound to give the RedBirds a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute.

“The last few minutes of the first half they carried play,” said Norman. “I challenged our women in the second half to make sure to outwork our opponents and they answered it with a great second half.”

Chaney netted her first on the day at 62:49 after a pass from Heather Piccariello was deflected to her. Minutes later she drew a penalty after being fouled in the box and slotted the PK home for her fourth goal of the season and the game-winning goal at 65:45.

“I am very proud of the way they played today and the way they came back from being a goal down,” concluded Norman. “It was a great performance against a really strong and talented team that I think will most likely be in the NCAA Tournament.”

The Bronco defense held the RedBirds to just two shots on goal on the day and six shots total. WMU keeper Michelle Watson needed to make just one save for her fourth win of the season.

Western Michigan is on the road at Valapariso on Friday afternoon and hosts Loyola Chicago on Sunday at 3 p.m.
