Men's Soccer Breezes By DePauw In Exhibition

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Three different players scored goals for the Brown & Gold in Saturday's exhibition outing against DePauw University, as the Broncos notched a solid 3-0 victory.

Western Michigan got first-half goals from freshman James Dutcher and sophomore Kyle Farris and upped its count with a third goal in the second half from junior Oliver Mayer.

The Broncos were in steady control of the match from beginning to end, as DePauw never had any real threats going forward. WMU rattled off 17 shots, while allowing their opponents just one, and held the advantage on corner kicks, 9-2, with both of DePauw's coming late in the game.

"I was pleased with the team's performance today in our first competitive match of 2012," said WMU head coach Stu Riddle. "We passed the ball well, the movement patterns were good and we scored three very good goals."

"To control the game as much as we did against a team that was 16-3 last year was pleasing, but there is a lot of improvement to be made before our season-opener next weekend."

Western Michigan just missed goals early on in the game, and would break the ice with a header by Dutcher in the 27th minute. Fellow newcomer Ryan Lemasters served a cross from the left and Dutcher headed it down from the right just inside the far post.

Farris made it 2-0 in WMU's favor in the 38th minute, when DePauw failed to clear a loose ball in the box. After an initial shot by Farris' was blocked, freshman Sean Hazen tapped the rebound back to Farris who this time had no trouble finishing.

Mayer scored the Broncos' final goal unassisted less than four minutes into the second half, firing from just inside the 18.

The game against DePauw, a Division III heavyweight that finished last season ranked No. 25 in the nation, was the Broncos' lone exhibition match of the year. WMU opens the regular season Friday, Aug. 24 against Marygrove at home at 4 p.m.
