Red-Zone Offense Worked on Friday for WMU

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Red zone efficiency was the emphasis for Friday's practice as the Broncos worked on their scoring abilities inside the 25-yard line. The WMU offense can sure throw the ball deep and score from many areas of the field and the red zone is no different.

"That was the whole emphasis today," said head coach Bill Cubit. "Every play was ran from inside the 20, using different positions on the field."

This certainly helped the team and quarterback Alex Carder, who had one of his best days in camp basically completing every ball and making the smart decisions.

"Alex was pretty special today," Cubit said. "It's so enjoyable to watch."

As for Carder and the offense while in the red-zone, some highlight plays developed. During the final 7-on-7 drill on the goaline, junior tight end Matt Cutler made an amazing grab as the ball basically bounced off every part of his body before finally catching it in his chest.

"It was nice to finally get Cutler back today," Cubit said.

The other outstanding play came from senior tight end Blake Hammond who jumped up over the defender on the fade to make the touchdown grab in the corner of the end zone. The tight ends seemed to steal the spotlight during Friday's practice, but coach Cubit knows that his receivers are well on their way to being special.

"The receivers are starting to come along a little bit more," Cubit said.

One receiver in particular was junior Justin Collins.

"He has looked good the last three days," Cubit said. "I think he is realizing just how good he really can be."

A Tampa Bay Buccaneers regional scout was spotted roaming the WMU sidelines during practice and the Buffalo Bills, the team that selected John Potter in the 2012 draft, were represented during Friday's morning session.
