LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- Western Michigan sophomore defenseman
Garrett Haar is one step closer to making the USA World Junior roster as the final roster at the USA Junior Evaluation Camp after cuts were made on Monday evening.
Haar is one of 34 remaining, including 11 defenseman, that will finish out camp with games against Finland on Wednesday and Saturday afternoon and two games against Sweden on Thursday and Friday afternoon. All games can be seen for a fee at
FASTHockey.com. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native appeared in three games with USA's Team Blue, helping Blue to a 2-1 record with wins over USA White and Finland.
The 6-foot-1, 198-pounder is coming off his freshman season that saw him named to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's All-Rookie team. He totalled eight points in 36 games and finished with a plus-four plus/minus rating. Haar, along with the others, are auditioning for a spot on the U.S. National Junior Team that will take part in the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, Dec. 26, 2012-Jan. 5, 2013, in Ufa, Russia. Should Haar make the roster he would be the first Bronco to play in the World Junior Championship since Joe Corvo represented the United States in 1997. Along with Corvo, former Broncos Marc Magliarditi (1996), Brett Brekke (1991), Mike Posma (1987) and Bart Larson (1978) have represented their countries in the World Junior Championships.
