BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Western Michigan freshman
Lindsey Hufnagel wrapped up day one of the heptathlon at the 2012 USA Junior Championships at Indiana University on Saturday.
Hufnagel battled the heat through four events on day one to end the day in 11th place but just 60 points out of sixth. She started off on a rough note taking 11th in the 100 meter hurdles and then tied for eighth in the high jump.
"The hurdles and high jump are still a work in progress," said head coach
Kelly Lycan. "She did a good job to really pull herself up at the end in the 200 though and it was good to end the day on that note."
She took fifth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.42 to earn 849 points for the event.
The heptathlon concludes on Sunday with the long jump, javelin throw and 800 meter run.
"If she can hit a really good distance in the long jump and get off to a good start I think she can carry that through the rest of the day," added Lycan."
