KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Incoming Western Michigan women's basketball player Alex Morton was presented the John Wooden/MCL Citizenship Award this past week while playing for the Indiana All-Stars.

Morton competed in four games this past week on the select team, twice against the Indiana Junior All-Stars, then two more times against the Kentucky All-Stars. Morton, a 5-9 guard from Mishawaka, Ind., Penn High School, became the first-ever girl from her area to win the Wooden Award in its 21-year history.

Recipients are chosen based on "scholarship, community involvement, school citizenship, extra-curricular activities and outstanding basketball skills," according to game officials. Penn's athletic department will receive a $500 donation based on her selection.

Morton was a first team all-state selection this past year and the Northern Indiana Conference's MVP, leading Penn to a 25-2 record and the state semifinals. During her senior campaign, she averaged 16.0 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.7 steals per game.

Morton will be one of three incoming freshmen for the Broncos in the fall, joining forwards Jessica Jessing (Toledo, Ohio/Sylvania Northview) and Miracle Woods (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Luers).
