Western Michigan Signee Brett Sunde Drafted by Oakland Athletics

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan baseball signee Brett Sunde was drafted on day three of the Major League Baseball draft by the Oakland Athletics in the 35th round, pick 1069.

This is the second-straight season Western Michigan has had a player/signee called in the MLB draft, and the Broncos have had seven picks in the last five years.

A six-foot, 185-pound senior catcher from Bishop Foley Catholic High School in Madison Heights, Mich., Sunde was named the Michigan Gatorade High School Player of the Year May 30 by ESPN.

He is one of 10 recruits that were inked in Western Michigan's recruiting class in November and would be an incoming freshman in the fall.

The defending Division 3 state champions, Sunde led Bishop Foley to its first Catholic League baseball championship just weeks ago and the team is poised to make another run in the state tournament. The Ventures downed Lutheran North 6-2 in the district semifinals, and beat Pontiac Academy of Excellence 20-0 in three innings in the championship game.

Entering the state tournament, Sunde was batting .500 with 43 RBIs, 40 runs scored and a .664 on-base percentage.
