Broncos Dominate at Jack Shaw Classic

KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan track and field team heads to the Mid-American Conference Championships next week on a high note after defeating Ball State 120-67 in the Jack Shaw Classic at WMU's Kanley Track & Field Complex on Friday night.

The Broncos dominated, taking first place in 14 of the 18 events. WMU started off the evening winning six of the eight field events. Andrea Hiler won both the discus and the shot put with a personal-best distance of 49-9/15.16m. Chelsea Gerbers took first in the hammer throw with a personal-best distance of 166-3/50.68m. The Broncos took first and second in the pole vault with Sarah Ross taking first with a height of 11-6.25/3.51m. Teammate Charity Hester tied the height but Ross held the tie-breaker to claim the title.

The Broncos had strong performances in both the long jump and the triple jump. In the triple jump Chiara Allen took first place with a distance of 41-02.25/12.55, while teammate Kathyrn Pickett took first in the long jump with a personal-best distance of 19-9.50/6.03m.

Western Michigan took first in the 200 meter, 400 meter, 800 meter, 3,000 meter, 100 meter hurdles, 400 meter hurdles and both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays. Despite a high winds, senior Victoria Chatman performed well in the 200 with a first place time of 24.2. Sophomore Andrea Arnold turned in one of her best times of the season in the 400 with a time  of 55.83 to take first place with senior Leya Munwam just behind her at 56.47 in second.

Cara Cremeans turned in a first-place performance in the 800 with a time of 2:14.21, while senior Samantha Draney claimed first in the 3,000 with a time of 10:02.58.

The 4x100 team combined for a first-place time of 45.94 seconds, while the 4x400 team took first at 3:52.26.

Western Michigan heads to Mount Pleasant, Mich., for the MAC Championships next week.
