WMU Football Holds First Spring Scrimmage

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Bronco football team held its first spring scrimmage at Waldo Stadium on a bitterly cold and windy Saturday morning.

The scrimmage, which lasted roughly 90 minutes, was broken into drives for the first and second teams at varying starting lines of scrimmage.  The first period started from the goal line going out, followed by the 25-yar line going out.  The first team offense then started from the 50 and then worked from the 25-yard line going in followed by goal line situations.

Alex Carder and Tyler Van Tubbergen took most of the snaps this morning with Carder completing 9-of-15 passes for 204 yards and a pair of TDs.  His first came during the 25-yard line and out period on second down.  Carder found Josh Schaffer on an out and a seal block from Eric Monette on Lewis Toler opened up the field for Schaffer's 73-yard catch and run to the end zone.

Schaffer finished with four grabs for 164 yards.  Monette had a pair of catches for 15 yards, including a five-yard TD from Carder during the goal line period, hanging on after getting hit by two defenders.

Zack Wynn also threw a TD pass, connecting with Matt Cutler from 20 yards out as the tight end caught the ball at the five and carried three defenders into the end zone.  Cutler finised with four grabs for 44 yards.

Darrin Duncan hauled in three catches for 28 yards, while Timmy Keith, Blake Hammond and Flenard Whitfield also each had a catch.

On the ground, Dareyon Chance led the way with 87 yards on 11 carries, including a 25-yard scoring run and six first downs.  Brian Fields had 12 carries for 43 yards, two first downs and two rushing TDs.  Antoin Scriven had six touches for 22 yards.  Tevin Drake did not participate due to a lower body injury.

Defensively, Toler showed his knack for being where the ball is with a pair of pass break ups and an interception on a tipped ball.  The Bronco defense was ball hungry, forcing three turnovers, including fumble recoveries by Trevor Ishmael and Justin Currie.

Currie and Ishmael recorded two of the defense's six pass break ups, while Chris Prom forced one of the offense's two fumbles.

J Schroeder handled the punting duties with the first team, while Andrew Haldeman did most of the PAT and field goal kicking for the WMU special teams unit.
