ATHENS, Ga. -- Chiara Allen shined as she broke the school record in the triple jump as the Western Michigan track and field team wrapped up day one at the Georgia Relays on Friday evening.
Allen jumped a distance of 40 feet, 3.25 inches on her third jump of the night, eventually taking fifth place in a competitive field. She edged out former Bronco
Ashley Hunault's record by a half-inch. Allen also took fourth place in the 100 meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 14.33 seconds. She was bested by teammate
Iris Campbell, who took third place with a time of 14.15.
Amanda Fenton also performed well in the event with a time of 14.61 for sixth place.
"I think it was a very good start to the weekend for us," said head coach
Kelly Lycan. "Chiara breaking the school record and then hitting a PR in the triple jump was great and 14.15 is a great first time of the season for Iris.
Campbell also helped the sprint medley relay team take first place with a time of 3:55.04. Campbell led off the first 200 meter leg to give the Broncos a lead before
Andrea Arnold held the lead in the second 200 meter leg.
Victoria Chatman recovered from a rough baton exchange before handing it off to
Rachel Whitley as she took it home during the 800 meter anchor leg.
"That's a really good early season time for us," added Lycan. "We'll be hoping we can run considerably faster later this year when we head to the Searay and Drake Relays, but for the first time this year that is pretty good."
In the throwing events
Chelsea Gerbers turned in an outdoor personal-best performance in the shot put. Gerbers threw 45 feet, 5.75 inches to take third overall and was the second-best collegiate finisher.
The Broncos get back at it on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
