KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's tennis team returned from a two-week hiatus to sweep a doubleheader at Sorensen Courts, defeating the Chicago State Cougars and the Ferris State Bulldogs by identical 7-0 scores on Tuesday. With the wins, the Broncos improve to 11-7 on the season; the win over Chicago State also gave the Broncos their first Mid-American Conference win of the season, making them 1-0 in MAC play.
The Broncos got stellar performances from throughout the line-up, as WMU went through both matches of the day without giving up a single set in singles play. Nadin Indre took all four of his matches at the No. 1 position, downing the Cougars' Mario Noboa 6-0, 6-2 and the Bulldogs' Laurent Galarneau 7-6 (5), 6-3 in singles play. Indre would team with Ross VanderPloeg in the No. 1 doubles matches on the day, beating the top pairings from Chicago State and Ferris State 8-1 and 8-0, respectively.
Indre notched the match clincher against Chicago State in the early match with his win over Noboa; Aaron Wong began the victory with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Luis Ulloa in the No. 5 singles match, and Marc Shideler gave the Broncos an overall 3-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Samuel McKinne in the No. 6 singles match. VanderPloeg would follow Indre with a win in the No. 4 singles match, and Zeyad Montasser would complete the sweep of the Cougars with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Julian Chavez in the No. 3 match.
The Broncos would roll through Ferris State in doubles play, but the Bulldogs would put up a much tougher fight in singles play and make things interesting. VanderPloeg and Olivarez quickly wrapped up their singles matches to give the Broncos a 3-0 lead, but the next few points would not come as easily. Indre fought off a rally from Galarneau in the No. 1 singles match, winning a tiebreaker in the first set to collect the clinching win.
Elsewhere on the courts, Wong led Tyler Marengo 5-1 in the second set of the No. 6 singles match but had to hold on for a 6-3, 7-5 win. Montasser came back from a slight second set deficit to beat Otto Keresztes in the No. 4 match, and Simon Blomberg would battle back to take a 6-4, 6-4 win in the No. 3 match over Steven Roberts.
