NEWARK, Del. - Like a week ago, Western Michigan softball went 3-1 at the 2012 Delaware Spring Invitational, defeating Norfolk State, 4-1, and host Delaware, 6-3.
Two Sunday wins will make a 14-hour bus trip back to Kalamazoo all the better as the Broncos closed out the tournament in victorious fashion, closing out the spring tournament schedule with an 11-9 record.
WMU scored its four runs in the first two innings against Norfolk State with two in the first and second frames. Meredith Whitney became only the second pitcher in Bronco softball history to reach the 50-win plateau with her complete game victory on Sunday. She now has 561 career strikeouts (second) and 63 career complete games.
Offensively, Whitney scored the first run of the game on a Courtney Rousseau base hit to center field and Gracie Barstad plated Rousseau on her third double of the season. Jennifer Tschetter reached on a fielder's choice and Christina Pigozzi recorded an infield hit to set the scene for Whitney. The senior ripped her third double of the season to right center field, clearing the bases.
NSU would scratch out a run in the fourth but Whitney, allowing two of five hits that inning, was in control the rest of the way, fanning five.
The Broncos needed a four-run seventh inning to come from behind against tournament host Delaware. Rousseau got things started with a one-out single through the left side. Buchanan followed with a single and Barstad was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Emma Bogart recorded her second career double to clear the bases and give WMU a 5-3 lead. Tschetter's sacrifice fly added the game's final run to score Bogart from third base.
Mackenzie Shepeck earned her first collegiate win, working the final two innings in relief and sitting the Blue Hens down in order in the home half of the seventh.
Western Michigan now turns to the rest of the season with a trip to South Bend, Ind., to take on Notre Dame scheduled for March 27.
