TAMPA, Fla. - Western Michigan finished the 2012 USF Under Armour Showcase Tournament with a 4-1 record after suffering a 6-0 loss to Fordham.

WMU entered the tournament finale without having surrendered a run over its last four games but the tables were turned on the Broncos as Fordham held them to four hits over seven innings.

"We didn't come to the field prepared to play this morning and you can't do that against any opponent," commented head coach Kathy Leitke.  "There needed to be more effort, hustle, energy.  Offensively, we had too many strikeouts and we had a couple of defensive errors that really sparked their offense."

Fordham scored a run in the second on a base hit up the middle and then added three more in the fourth.  The Rams capped the scoring with a pair of scores in the sixth.

Meredith Whitney suffered her first loss in a month, allowing five earned runs despite striking out seven batters.  For the week the senior fanned 15 batters, picking up a pair of complete-game shutout victories for WMU.

The Broncos led off the game with a Whitney single, who also hit .333 this week (5-for-15), but didn't manage another base hit until Tara Buchanan led off the fourth with a single through the left side. 

Their most productive inning came in the home half of the seventh.  Gracie Barstad, who led the Broncos with a .583 average (7-for-12) over the past weekend, led off with a single to left field and Diana Patterson followed with a base hit of her own.  That is where the Bronco rally ended as the next three batters went down with a fly out and two strikeouts, respectively.

Also hitting over .300 for Western Michigan during the USF Under Armour Showcase Tournament were Christina Pigozzi (.364) and Jennifer Tschetter (.300).  WMU plays in its final spring tournament March 17-18 at the University of Delaware Spring Invitational.
