KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan gymnastics welcomes its second non-conference opponent of the year, hosting Illinois-Chicago Sunday, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. The Broncos are off to one of the best starts in school history, entering the meet with a 4-0 overall record while the Flames are 4-3.
The Broncos maintain a 193.494 season average, ranking 32nd in the nation, and posted the second-highest score in school history last time out, registering a 195.300 against Bowling Green last Sunday. The 195.300 is the highest score tallied by a Mid-American Conference team this season. The Broncos led start to finish against the Falcons, starting the day off tying its fifth highest score ever on vault with a 48.775. WMU has improved its overall score in every meet this season.
UIC is coming off a 194.125 win in a quadrangular meet Friday night in Ypsilanti, Mich., against Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Illinois State. The Flames' highest score of the season was a 194.350 Jan. 28 against Kentucky. The team was averaging a 192.167 entering this week, ranking 42nd in the nation. UIC took last year's meeting against Western Michigan on Jan. 17, 2011, edging the Broncos in Chicago, 192.700-192.350.
Sunday will be Girls Scouts Day, as nearly 300 members of local troops are expected to be in attendance. Western Michigan will be distributing team posters at the meet and will hold a post-meet clinic and autograph session.
Western Michigan is on the road for the next two weeks following Sunday's outing. The Broncos travel to Eastern Michigan Feb. 11 and then to Illinois State Feb. 17.
