TODAY'S MATCHES
The Western Michigan (2-2) men's tennis team returns to the friendly confines of West Hills Athletic Club, where they will host the IPFW Mastodons and the UW-Green Bay Phoenix in a Midwest regional doubleheader. Coming off losses to a pair of Big Ten opponents, the Broncos will look to right the ship. The Broncos have an 8-0 record all-time against IPFW, and a 10-2 record all-time against the Phoenix.
SIMON SAYS
It was announced just yesterday that WMU junior
Simon Blomberg was named the MAC Player of the Week, winning the first conference award of the season. Blomberg helped the Broncos to a pair of wins against Detroit and Bradley, going 4-0 in the season opening matches in both singles and doubles play. Blomberg was also part of the only Bronco victory against Michigan, teaming with
Pablo Olivarez to take the No. 2 doubles match from the Wolverines. Blomberg was a tough out in the No. 3 singles play in that match, forcing a third set before falling.
HOLDING THE TITLE
The 2011 edition of the Broncos finished a perfect 5-0 in Mid-American Conference play to capture the 22nd conference championship in program history, and the seventh championship under head coach
Dave Morin. The Broncos' sole loss to a conference opponent in 2011 was in the MAC Tournament to eventual tournament champion Ball State. This year's team returns 2011 Second Team All-MAC player
Pablo Olivarez.
NADIN SITS AT THE TOP
Sophomore
Nadin Indre is in just his first year with the program, but has already shown he has the talent to play at the top of the line-up for the Broncos. Indre is 2-2 in No. 1 singles play so far, with his only losses coming to players from Michigan and nationally-ranked Indiana. Indre has an identical 2-2 record in doubles play as well, teaming with
Ross VanderPloeg for a 2-2 record in the early portion of the season.
HOT START
The Broncos started the season on a two-match winning streak, defeating Detroit 6-1 and Bradley 7-0 at West Hills Athletic Club. Five different Broncos won both of their singles matches in the doubleheader, including
Nadin Indre, who took both No. 1 singles and both No. 1 doubles matches (with teammate
Ross VanderPloeg). Indre, VanderPloeg, and
Zeyad Montasser have each won seven of their last 10 singles matches.
DUAL MATCH FORMAT
Today's dual matches will be contests for the best-of-seven team points. The dual will begin with three doubles matches consisting of eight-game pro sets. The team that wins two of these three matches will enter the singles competition with one of seven points. After a brief intermission, six singles matches will be played. Each singles match will be the best of three tie-break sets and worth one point towards the team competition. The overall dual match will be decided when one team secures four total points. Matches in progress when the dual match is clinched will be played to completion.
