CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference announced its conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, with Western Michigan's Simon Blomberg taking home the first honor of the season. It is the first time in Blomberg's career that he has won the award.
Blomberg has been the most consistently successful individual for the Broncos in the early portion of the season, notching a 2-2 record in singles play and a 3-1 record in doubles play despite playing against nationally-ranked opponents in that span. Blomberg went 2-0 in singles play on the team's first day of competition, winning the No. 3 singles matches against Detroit (6-1, 6-1) and Bradley (6-3, 6-1).
Blomberg would team with Zeyad Montasser to win the No. 2 doubles match against Detroit (8-1), as well as the No. 2 doubles match against Bradley (8-5) while teamed with Pablo Olivarez. Overall, he helped the Broncos to a 6-1 win over Detroit and a 7-0 win over Bradley. Blomberg teamed with Olivarez again against Michigan, taking the No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-4. Blomberg was impressive even in a loss, taking the Wolverines' Alex Petrone to three sets in the No. 3 singles match before falling 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (4).
