Broncos Sweep MAC Track & Field Athletes of the Week

CLEVELAND -- The Western Michigan women's track and field team kicked off the 2012 indoor season with a 92-58 win over Toledo and was rewarded for it on Tuesday afternoon by sweeping the Mid-American Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Week awards.

Iris Campbell was named MAC Track Athlete of the Week and sophomore Chiara Allen was named MAC Field Athlete of the Week for their help in the Broncos' win over Toledo.

Campbell won three events on her way to helping the Broncos win their first meet of the season. She took first place in the 60 meter high hurdles with a meet record time of 8.81 seconds, putting a .29 second difference between herself and second place in the process. Campbell broke another meet record in the 200 meter dash with a first place time of 25.13 seconds. She also took first place in the long jump with a distance of 18 feet, 3.75 inches. Campbell accounted for 15 of WMU's 92 points and was the only competitor to win multiple events at the meet.

Allen, who wins the award for the first time in her career, nearly broke the school record in the triple jump. The Lake Orion, Mich., native jumped a distance of 39 feet, 9.75 inches to take first place by well over a foot over fellow teammate Whitney Freeman.

Campbell, Allen and the rest of the Bronco track and field team will be in action on Saturday at Bowling Green.
