The Western Michigan football strength & conditioning program handed out awards to the student-athletes that performed the best in the weight room during summer work outs.
The team was tested on bench press, power clean, back squat, 40-yard dash, 3-cone agility, 20-yard shuttle and body fat percentage. The student-athletes accrue points throughout the summer workout season.
Alex Carder was named best athlete overall with 792.8 points, also claiming the award for the quarterback position. Carder posted a power clean weight of 315 lbs., a 3-cone agility time of 6.95 seconds and a 20-yard shuttle run of 4.11 seconds.
Greg Peterson was best among offensive linemen with 643.0 points. His summer was highlighted with a power clean of 320 lbs. Jon Hoffing also performed well with a vertical jump of 27.5" and 5.18-second 40-yard dash. Dann O'Neill had a standing long jump of 8'-7.25".
Clark Mussman was one of seven student-athletes to score over 700 points with 735.8. He registered a power clean of 325 lbs.
Brian Fields finished second only to Carder in point total with 765.0. He posted a back squat weight of 520 lbs. and a 3-cone agility time of 6.90 seconds. The running backs were the winners of the team conditioning competition.
Ansel Ponder captured the title among wide receivers with 721.8 points. Jordan White recorded a bench press of 350 lbs. and a 40-yard dash time of 4.47 seconds.
Andrew Sharp used a bench press of 440 lbs. to earn the award for the defensive tackles with 648.0 points. Sharp was also voted the most improved athlete. Travonte Boles had a back squat of 615 lbs. Starting line mate Drew Nowak posted a back squat weight of 545 lbs. Paul Dreher registered a bench press of 420 lbs.
Paul Hazel bested all other defensive ends with 761.3 points, finishing third in the overall standings. The junior set a WMU all-time record with a standing long jump of 10'-8.75" and registered a vertical jump of 37". Deauntay Legrier's summer was highlighted with a 400-lb. bench press.
Chris Prom captured the title among linebackers with 679.5 overall points.
Dervon Wallace was best among defensive backs with 737.3 points. He also set a new WMU all-time record with a vertical jump of 38.5". His 40-yard dash time was equally impressive at 4.38 seconds. Also performing well among the defensive backs were Jon Henry with a 36.5" vertical jump and a 4.36 40-yard dash. Doug Wiggins posted 470 lbs. on back squat.
John Potter was best among the specialists with 736.5 points. Punter Ben Armer boasted a back squat of 490 lbs. and a power clean of 320 lbs.
