EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2010 season as they fell to Michigan State, 1-0, on the road on Sunday afternoon.
The lone goal came in the 32nd minute on a counter-attack after a Bronco corner kick. Midfielder Megan Pines cleared WMU's corner down the field to forward Laura Heyboer. Heyboer made a run on goal, beating both WMU defenders before putting it in the net for her first of the season.
The Broncos had to endure a barrage of shots from MSU in the first half with 10 of MSU's 14 shots coming in the first 45 minutes. Senior goalkeeper Julia Francy made a season-high six saves in the loss.
WMU put pressure on the Spartans in the second half, landing two of their six shots on goal but were unable to convert to force the tie.
"We came out a little tight," said head coach Suzie Grech. "Overall we played well once we settled the ball down and worked through our midfielders. I thought the second half was much better than the first. It didn't take us long to settle into find our rythm and create chances. We just didn't finish."
Western Michigan heads to Bloomington, Ind., on Wednesday evening for a 7:35 p.m. game against the Indiana Hoosiers.
