COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Western Michigan volleyball knocked off Pittsburgh, 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-21), at St. John Arena in its final match in Ohio for the weekend.
The Broncos (2-1) added a victory over the Panthers (0-2) of the Big East to their win over Arizona State of the Pac-10 on Friday. Pitt finished second in the Big East in 2009.
Freshman Gillian Asque led the way with a match-high 13 kills and four digs, while junior Ashley Turnage hit .500 with nine kills and four digs. Senior Allyson Doyle hit .444 for eight kills and match-high 13 digs, while freshman Ali Gossen hit .389 with eight kills and five digs. Sophomore Jessica Brown added nine kills hitting .471 with a match-high three blocks.
Junior Sam Viox directed the offense to a .349 attack percentage with 44 assists and freshman Lena Oliver added 11 digs.
WMU's defense held Pitt to .194 hitting with 50 digs and forced 17 errors.
"It was nice to see our team collect itself, refocus and come back from a disappointing outing two hours prior," head coach Colleen Munson said. "Pitt's an athletic team, but we stayed in our system and made them adjust to us. Preseason is really the time to work on our side of the net, even with an opponent on the other side of the net. I believe we made real improvements this weekend."
The Broncos climbed to a 6-3 lead, but the Panthers came back to tie the score, 9-9, after a block. A Pitt service error and Viox kill put WMU back up two, but the Panthers tied the score for the final time. Asque had two kills, Gossen put a ball away and Turnage and Viox combined on a stuff to put WMU up four, 16-12, and force Pittsburgh into a timeout.
Pitt came back within two, 18-16, but one kill by Turnage and two in a row from Doyle put WMU up four, 20-16, and forced the final Pitt timeout. WMU was unfazed and kept the run going with another Doyle kill and a block by Doyle and Brown to go up six, 22-16. The Broncos put the set away, 25-16, on a Brown blast.
WMU hit a season-high .405 in the set with 18 kills and three errors. The outside trio of Doyle, Asque and Gossen each had four kills.
Two kills by Asque sandwiched around one by Turnage put the Broncos up five, 9-4, and they were hardly threatened the rest of the second set. Doyle used a two-handed push to right back to end the set for WMU, 25-16, and put them up 2-0 for the first time in 2010.
WMU hit .258 with 14 kills, while holding the Panthers to .029 hitting with eight kills and seven errors. Asque had five more kills and Turnage added four in the second frame.
The Broncos continued to overwhelm Pittsburgh in the early going of set three and went up by six, 12-6, when Oliver punched an attack back over the net for a dig and kill on the same play. Kills by Doyle and Asque eventually put WMU up by eight, 19-11, but Pitt made one last stand. The Panthers closed within three, 22-19, on an ace and WMU called time. Gossen hammered a kill to stop the run and the team's traded points the rest of the way until Asque smashed a shot cross court to end the match, 25-21.
The Broncos hit .366 in set three with 17 kills and two errors, while holding Pitt to .250 with 16 kills and six errors.
Western Michigan plays next in its home opener on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against defending Summit League champion IPFW.
