CLEVELAND - Tim Hiller becomes only the second Bronco and first male Western Michigan student-athlete to be named recipient of the Bob James Memorial Award. The award, presented by the Mid-American Conference, recognizes one female and one male student-athlete who have achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.5, and have displayed good character, leadership and citizenship.
The student-athletes
are nominated during the year in which they complete their final season of
eligibility. The $5,000 post-graduate scholarship, which goes to the University's general scholarship fund, is awarded in honor Bob
James, the second commissioner in MAC history (1964-71). The Bob James Memorial Award is in its 21st year.
Hiller is the first male student-athlete from Western Michigan to win the award and the first Bronco since Julie Brown (volleyball) who was the female recipient 18 years ago in 1992.
What Tim Hiller accomplished on the field is unmatched as he became the football program's career leader in passing attempts, completions, completion percentage, yards, TDs, total offense, total offensive plays and 300-yard games. He also owns the single-season marks for all but one of the above categories. In total, Hiller owns or shares 18 career, season or game records. Off the field Tim completed his undergraduate degree with a perfect 4.00 GPA and currently maintains a perfect 4.00 GPA in pursuit of his MBA.
He was the recipient of the 2009 Wuerffel Trophy, was named to the National Football Foundation's National Scholar Athlete Team, was the NFF Michigan Chapter's 2009 College Athlete of the Year and was named Second Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America in 2009.
Hiller is currently a member of the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent.
