KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Former Michigan state champion and
University of Massachusetts standout
Sara Kelly returns to her home state,
accepting a position as assistant gymnastics coach at Western Michigan
University. A Saginaw, Mich., native, Kelly competed at UMass under current
Bronco head coach
Dave Kuzara.
"Sara is the perfect person to come in to the program at this time," Kuzara
said. "Her expertise in the area of choreography and balance beam will have an
immediate impact. I have known Sara since she was nine years old and have
watched her grow as an athlete and in her professional life. She will be a great
resource and mentor for the young women on the Bronco gymnastics team for years
to come."
Kelly was a Michigan state champion on the uneven bars during
her prep days at Freeland High School, as well as a USA Gymnastics state champion on the balance beam.
She went on to compete collegiately at UMass under Kuzara from 1995-99, helping
the Minutewomen to back-to-back Atlantic 10 titles in 1996 and 1997.
"I'm excited for the opportunity to be a part of Western Michigan
gymnastics," Kelly said. "I'm happy to be back in my home state and near my
family and friends. I look forward to being an important resource for both Coach
Kuzara and the team's ascent into national prominence."
Kelly has lived in New York City for the past 11 years, where she opened
her own choreography business, SK Choreography, in 2007. Her dancing led to a
role in the 2001 movie Kate & Leopold, where she is featured dancing with
Hugh Jackman in the opening ballroom scene. Kelly has also served as a private
gymnastics coach at Chelsea Piers in New York City for the last three
years.
Kelly earned her communications degree from UMass in 1999. She worked for
both Atlantic and Columbia Records in release planning, as well as international
marketing and promotion.
Western Michigan is in its second season under Kuzara. The Broncos made
great strides in Kuzara's first year, concluding 2010 with an 8-13 regular
season record, marking the most wins for the program since 2006.
