KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Miami avoided a series sweep with a 10-3 win over Western Michigan Sunday. Kyle Galbraith and Grant Simotes each had a pair of hits for the Broncos.
Miami starter Mac Thoreson (2-3) threw a complete game, scattering eight hits and striking out seven. Western Michigan scored two runs in the third and another in the fifth. Jimmy Martinez slugged his first career triple in the third, driving in a run, and later scored on a single up the middle by Simotes. Galbraith recorded an RBI in the fifth with a sac fly.
WMU starter Billy Morrison (1-5) looked even more dominating than Thoreson in the first three frames, but things didn't end well for the Bronco right-hander. Morrison retired the first nine straight batters he faced. The final two outs in both the second and third were with swinging strikeouts. Miami (16-19, 5-8 MAC) then got to Morrison in the fourth. The RedHawks connected on four hits and used a Bronco error to score two runs.
A leadoff walk, an error on a sac bunt and a single loaded the bases for the RedHawks in the fifth. Kyle Weldon stepped to the plate and cleared the bags, belting a grand slam to right field. Morrison remained in for one more batter, but then was replaced by Eric Heckaman on the mound. Heckaman threw the final 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits.
Weldon had a big day for Miami, going 2-for-4 with six RBIs.
Western Michigan (9-25, 3-9 MAC) is on the road for its next five games, traveling to Michigan State Tuesday to play the Spartans at Oldsmobile Park in downtown Lansing at 5:05 p.m.
