Jennifer Roberts Ends Bronco Career With a Bang at Alex Wilson Invitational

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- For everyone except Irene Cooper, the Western Michigan indoor track and field season came to an end on the final day of competition at the Alex Wilson Invitation on the campus of Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Jennifer Roberts finished her Bronco career with a personal best performance in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 9:36.10. The time was also the third fastest in WMU history, putting Roberts behind former All-Americans Kayla Skelly and Caroline Mullen in the history books.

“It is really gratifying as a coach to see her have the success she has had this year,” said head coach Kelly Lycan. “Jennifer's performances have increased so dramatically. It was just so much fun to watch her evolve into a national caliber distance runner that she is now.”

The 4x400 meter relay team hit its season's best time of 3:39.53 to make a provisional qualifying mark. Ashley Hunault ran the lead-off leg for the Broncos with a 56.9 second split. From there she handed it off to 400 meter MAC champion Victoria Chatman, who ran a 53.6 split for her best split of the season. Chatman, who usually closes it out on the anchor leg, handed it off to freshman Iris Campbell for the third leg. Campbell ran her best split of the season, 54.8 seconds, to keep the Broncos with the leading pack. Leya Munwam was handed the baton for the anchor leg and took off, finishing with a blazing split of 53.9 seconds.

“It was an excellent way for us to finish the indoor season and we hope to carry over some of this momentum into the outdoor season,” added Lycan. “I think we can have a top qualify 4x400 team by the end of our outdoor season.”

Although the team did hit a provisional qualifying time, it will not be fast enough to get them into next weekend's NCAA Championship. Only Cooper will be heading to Fayetteville, Ark., for the indoor championships at the University of Arkansas.
