KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan track and field team heads to Notre Dame this weekend to take part in annually one of the top track and field meets in the nation, the Meyo Invitational.
The festivities begin Friday evening and the Broncos kick it off with the
Ashley Hunault competing in the long jump. The long jump is just one of four events that Hunault will compete in, after competing in seven at last weekend's CMU Invitational.
Irene Cooper and
Christine Bays follow shortly in the 20-pound weight throw. Cooper is currently ranked ninth in the nation in the weight throw and first in the Mid-American Conference. She will be looking to try to break the elusive 20-meter barrier and gain automatic qualifying status for the indoor NCAA Championships. The senior has been consistent so far this season, throwing provisional qualifying distances in each of the four meets she has competed in.
“This is one of the biggest indoor meets in the country,” said head coach
Kelly Lycan. “They have a great facility and it always draws some of the top competition in the nation.”
Senior
Jennifer Roberts gets her first crack at the 5,000m run on Friday evening to start off the running events.
“Jennifer did a great job for us at the Penn Relays in the 5,000m run last year,” added Lycan. “We're hoping she can break that 17 minute barrier for us.”
Alexis Brown,
Brittany Calhoun and Shelly Mathewson close out the evening's action in the 300m dash, but the competition resumes bright and early on Saturday morning.
Samantha Tomerlin start's Saturday off for the Broncos in the 3,000m run. The Broncos will also compete in the 60m hurdles, 60m dash, shot put, pole vault, mile run, 400m dash, 800m run, 200m dash, triple jump and close out the day with the 4x400m relay.
