WMU Quotes - UAF Game 1

Head Coach Jim Culhane:

On the overall effort:

"I thought it was a real solid effort by everybody for 60 minutes. Grinding it out at times, we battled real hard against a ranked opponent and getting a win here in conference play. We've been so close. It's obviously nice for the guys to get three goals here and find a way to get it in the goal with a lot of hard work. It's nice to be rewarded with three points here in league play."

On getting all three goals from defenseman:

"Well, we mentioned that in the locker room afterwards too. No, that's not a typical scenario you know, with Ludwig got a nice one there with JJ with the face-off win on the goal there. Nagorsen gets the win there on the draw over to Kavaya and then to Collins. We were all talking on the bench, we weren't sure if Jordan had shot that one at the empty net or if that was Riley that shot it down. At that time we didn't care, we got the empty-netter. That was kind uncharacteristic to see three of them come from the blue line, but we'll take them anyway."

On line changes:

"We did, we had some new scenery for some guys and that paid big dividends tonight. I thought we did some great things offensively, so I think that was positive for us."

Goaltender Riley Gill:

On getting a win:

"It's been awhile. We had a really good week and we really beared down on all the little things, got back to the basics and we emphasized getting the puck deep, keep to our systems, and we got more offense generated out of that stuff, and we popped a couple goals, and it was a good win."

On the defensive play:

"First period was good. We had a couple breakdowns there but after getting the one power play goal and getting down early we really got to it and played really well. The second period was really shaky, I think they had 15 or 16 shots on goal, but in the third period we bounced back really nicely. They only had seven or six shots there. They had a good game and that's what we need the rest of the season."

"It was a big win for us tonight, we've been winless for 7 or 8 games now. It feels good to get a win tonight, and we got to come back tomorrow night."

On the empty netter scored by Jordan Collins:

"I wish, I wish. Jordan got it. I tried when they dumped the puck down on me but I couldn't get a handle on it. Hopefully I'll get one before I leave Western."

On beating a ranked opponent:

"We played them last year pretty solid. I think we took two out of four and you try not to think about ranked opponents too much going into a game. We knew we could beat them and we did tonight."

Defenseman Tyler Ludwig:

On scoring as a defenseman:

"Not really something you worry about. You enjoy getting them. Personally, it came at the right time for me tonight to give us the lead. If we take care of our defensive zone, good stuff will come and we had a lot of pressure coming in their zone. It was a long time coming this year."

"Yeah, the forwards took a night off tonight, so someone had to step it up."

"Every single night, whoever scores, it's an honor to get a goal. I'm sure our forwards will come back a little more hungry and maybe we can keep the rally going for defense."

On scoring his fifth career goal against Alaska:

"I didn't know that. Just a right time, right place situation, I guess. Playing with JJ and them, he had a good pass across the ice to find me, so I gotta give credit to the other guys on the ice."

"We gotta enjoy tonight, and come back tomorrow. It's nice to get three points."

Jordan Collins:

On the first goal:

"It was just a nice set up. We won the draw, it went right back to PJ and he just fed it over and I shot it. I didn't even know it went in. Guys started coming out to me."

On the empty-netter:

"I was just trying to get it out of the zone and luckily it went in. I was kinda nervous because it started off going a little right and came back to the left and it went in."

On scoring two goals:

"It definitely is. Having two goals before tonight and getting two tonight is something really special for me."

"I don't. I just try to keep them out of the net. I don't care if they go in. It's just fun getting them when I do."

On the defensive effort:

"I think Riley was helping us out more than we helped him. He was making a lot of great saves. He played great and our defense played pretty well and we had a lot of key blocks up front, so it was good."
