THIS WEEK -- Western Michigan continues its non-conference road trip, but only has one game on the weekend against Oakland indoors at the Ultimate Soccer Arena in Pontiac on Sunday afternoon at 5 p.m.
LAST WEEK -- Interim head coach
Suzie Grech picked up her first career win as the Broncos defeated SE Missouri State 2-1 last Friday at the UNI Panther Invitational.
Caitlin Henderson scored the game-winning goal when her corner kick was deflected in by the Redhawks defense.
The Broncos went undefeated on the weekend as WMU and UNI battled to a 0-0 tie in Sunday's match. Western Michigan's midfield and back line dominated the Panthers, allowing only one shot on goal in 120 minutes.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES -- Oakland, like WMU, has Friday off and enters Sunday's game with a 2-2-0 record. The Grizzlies dropped their season opener at Michigan State and then defeated St. Bonaventure before splitting games at a tournament at Northern Arizona.
Sophomore Sarah Lynch leads the Grizzlies in scoring with four points off of two goals. As a freshman she was named second team All-Summit League as well as to the All-Newcomer team.
Freshman Whitney Sarkis has started three of OU's four games on the season, earning both of its wins. She sports a 1.00 goals against average and a .824 save percentage and boasts one shutout.
INDOORS -- The Broncos and the Grizzlies will play on a regulation size field indoors at the Ultimate Soccer Arena in Pontiac. The Ultimate Soccer Arena boasts a regulation sized field as well as “Astro-Turf GameDay grass XPE with built-in TurfAide.”
FIRSTS ALL AROUND -- A multitude of “firsts” were handed out in WMU's 2-1 win over SE Missouri State. Interim head coach
Suzie Grech collected her first win, sophomore defender
Caitlin Henderson and freshman forward
Anina Cicerone each tallied their first collegiate goals and WMU earned its first win and first shutout of the season.
A LONG WAY TO GO -- Julia Francy picked up her 11th career shutout with the 0-0 tie against UNI on Sunday. Francy ranks third in WMU history in shutouts behind Megan Ramey and Katie Perz. Perz is the all-time leader with 20 shutouts during her playing time from 2002-2005.
THE CAPTAINS -- Senior
Hillary Wernlund and
Ashley Caliendo have been named captains for the 2009 season. The leadership position is nothing new for Wernlund, who was one of three captains during the 2008 season. Caliendo will don the arm band for the first time in her career.
PROVING THE COACHES WRONG -- Last season Western Michigan was picked to finish last in the Mid-American Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. The Broncos ended up 6-4-1 conference to take fifth place, including a home win over eventual champions Toledo.
This season the coaches selected Western Michigan to finish in ninth place.
ALL BUT ONE -- Western Michigan returns 10 out of 11 starters from last season's team, the only one missing is former captain
Ashleigh Carpentier. Taking her spot in the two exhibition matches was freshman defender
Kelsey Baskins.
NEWCOMERS -- The Broncos have eight new faces to the team made up of seven freshmen and one junior transfer.
Kelsey Baskins (D), Erin Blewitt (MF),
Anina Cicerone (F),
Stefana Ciraulo (D),
Autumn Lucero (GK),
Megan Matula (F), and
Brittney Pavlica (F) make up the freshmen class. Ali Bagely (MF) transferred last season from South Carolina and is eligible to play this season. Bagely netted a goal in WMU's 2-0 exhibition win over Indiana State.
