OTTAWA, Ontario -- Future Bronco Luke Witkowski was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the sixth round, 160th overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft on Saturday.

The Holland, Mich., native signed his letter of intent in November 2007 and will defer his enrollment until the 2009-10 season. Witkowski , a six-foot-two, 200-pound defenseman spent the 2007-08 season with the Columbus Junior Bluejackets of the United States Hockey League, scoring three goals and dishing out 10 assists.

"Luke's game has had tremendous growth while playing in Columbus," said head coach Jim Culhane. "I am extremely impressed with his development. He is a well-rounded defenseman and a big guy that can skate, has great speed and agility."

This marks the fourth-straight year a Bronco recruit has been taken in the NHL Entry Draft. Witkowski joins Matt Clackson (215th overall, 2005), Chris Frank (188th overall, 2006), Max Campbell (138th overall, 2007) and Ryan Watson (191st overall, 2007) as NHL draftees for Western Michigan in recent years under Culhane.
