Stampeders Draft Release
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Western Michigan defensive end Fernand Kashama was the 16th overall selection of the Calgary Stampeders in the 2008 Canadian Football League (CFL) Draft this week. Kashama was taken with the last pick in the second round and was one of six overall selections for the Stampeders.
The CFL held its annual draft on April 30. The draft consisted of six rounds with a total of 48 players selected. Kashama was Calgary's third overall pick and only selection of the second round. He was also one of three players selected from the Mid-American Conference. Calgary came to have the 16th pick in the draft via trades with Saskatchewan and Edmonton.
Kashama, a converted tight end, appeared in all 12 games for the Broncos at the defensive end position. He originally came to WMU as an offensive player but after biding his time at tight end and then as a linebacker for a stint, settled into the defensive end position in 2007.
The Toronto native registered at least one tackle in six of 12 games last season, including three-straight to end the season. He made a career-best three stops against Central Connecticut State and recorded his first career sack (and tackle for loss) in the season finale against Temple.
Kashama has one year of eligibility remaining and the CFL drafts players one year but allows them to complete their eligibility. Calgary will retain Kashama's rights for one year. At that time he will have to make a decision as to whether he plans to sign with the organization or pursue other opportunities.
Western Michigan football has had five former Broncos sign and/or play with the Calgary organization. The most recent was current WMU offensive graduate assistant Ryan Cubit, who signed a free agent contract with the Stampeders following the 2006 campaign.
