KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Western Michigan's softball team is currently riding a four-game win streak, its longest of the season. The Broncos will put it to the test this week facing Michigan State on the road before returning home to battle Kent State in a twinbill on Friday and a Saturday-Sunday showdown with Buffalo, both out of the Mid-American Conference's East Division.
THE ANSWER IS NO ? Kyla Sullivan and Kelli Zache combined for Western Michigan's first no-hitter since April 29, 2006 when Sullivan worked 4.0 of five innings in an 8-0 win over NIU on April 5.
THE YARD WON'T HOLD IT ? Fran Ebert Field used to be known as a pitcher's ball park but WMU is working hard to disspell that fact with its home run barrage over the past few games. Western Michigan hit five home runs over four games this past week, including three in the NIU series alone. Molly Mroczek and Sam Vargocko each registered a home run against Oakland in WMU's series sweep of the Grizzlies. Brittney Reist and Amanda Gelder had a home run apiece in the series opener against the Huskies, with Gelder's being of the three-run variety.
WALK THIS WAY ? Lexi Jager may have had the most exciting home run of the season when she took a 3-2 pitch out of the park with two out and a runner on to give the Broncos a 5-3 win over Northern Illinois. It was WMU's fifth dinger in four games and gave her team 16 home runs on the season. Western Michigan had 16 home runs during all of the 2007 season.
SCOREBOARD ? There was a lot of scoreboard watching for Western Michigan fans this past week as WMU outscored its opponents, 27-4, over four games and outscored conference opponent NIU, 13-3, in the Broncos' two-game sweep. WMU is outscoring opponents, 74-55, so far this season with the biggest advantage coming in the fifth innings of games when Western Michigan is besting the opposition, 17-1.
ON DECK ? Western Michigan goes on the road next weekend for a divisional doubleheader at Toledo (April 18) and then a two-game set at Bowling Green (April 19-20).
