BRADENTON, Fla.- The Western Michigan baseball team (5-1) picked up its third win in as many days, beating Northeastern, 16-14, in Bradenton, Fla., Sunday.
The Brown & Gold scored runs in each of the first seven innings and withstood a late Northeastern rally, out-hitting the Huskies, 15-11.
Over the course of three games in Florida, Western Michigan has rang up 51 runs on 55 hits.
Four Broncos hit home runs in Sunday's slugfest. Joe Sheets cracked a two-run homer to get things started in the first inning. Chris Lewis belted a solo shot in the third and Max Kelmigian followed with a two-run long ball in the same frame, as WMU went on the produce five runs in the inning. Zach Gentile added a solo home run in the fifth.
Western Michigan went up 16-8 after seven and a half innings, but Northeastern used four runs, three unearned, in the bottom of the seventh to inch closer. A two-run homer in the eighth brought the Huskies within two, 16-14, but Derek Mosher stepped in and stopped the bleeding, striking out the last batter in the eighth and sending NU down 1-2-3 in the ninth. It was Mosher's first career save.
Brian Stroud got the start on the mound for WMU and lasted three innings, giving up seven runs, five earned, on four hits. Michael Klepper worked the next three innings, allowing three runs, two earned, and picked up his first collegiate win. Tim Mowry threw the seventh and into the eighth, before being replaced by Mosher.
Kyle Galbraith had the hot bat for the Broncos, going 4-for-5, while driving in two runs. Gentile, Sheets, Kelmigian, Kevan Hess and Grant Simotes all ended with two RBIs apiece.
Western Michigan committed three errors, while Northeastern had two.
Huskie starter Ryan Quigley (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing 10 runs, all earned, on nine hits in 3.1 innings pitched.
The Brown & Gold will look to keep its four-game win streak going, battling Fairfield twice in the next two days.
