KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan (4-8-0) got back on the winning track with a 5-2 victory over Wright State Monday at the WMU Soccer Complex. Four different Broncos scored.
The Broncos were dominant throughout the afternoon, taking control in the sixth minute on a goal by senior Tyler Rosenhagen. Saeed Sulemana Baba got a head on a ball played in from the right side which Raider goalie Corey Whisenhunt batted down but could not corral. Rosenhagen buried home the rebound.
Western Michigan made it 2-0 before the half on a goal by Dan Lewis. Lewis shot across the box and found the back left corner of the net on an assist by Sam Meyer for his first goal of the season.
The Broncos extended the lead to 3-0 in the 57th minute. Lewis chipped a ball in from the right and Ross Dickson flicked it on to Danny Mortemore who volleyed it in.
Kai Mendes set up the Broncos’ fourth goal, ripping off a shot from the left corner of the 18. Again, the ball had enough velocity on it that Whisenhunt could only knock it down and Sulemana Baba was there on the backside for the finish. It was his team-leading ninth goal of the year.
Earlier in the game Mendes was denied another near goal for the freshman forward. Shaun Clements played Mendes directly off a corner kick and Mendes rifled a shot to the back post, but Whisenhunt made a terrific diving safe.
Rosenhagen put the icing on the cake for the Brown & Gold, scoring the final goal with 18.5 remaining in the game. Dickson and Clements each recorded an assist.
Leading 4-0, Western Michigan conceded two goals late in the game, the first via penalty kick in the 71st minute. The second goal skipped past WMU goalie Casey Aubil and the Bronco defense coming from close to midfield in the 81st minute. Wright State drops to 2-8-1 on the season.
The five goals tied for the second most for the Broncos this season, after scoring six against Centenary on Sept. 27. The win snapped a two-game losing skid for WMU.
The Broncos poured on 21 shots, a team high this year, and put 14 of those on goal. The Raiders took just eight, with Aubil making three saves. WMU also had the upper hand on corner kicks, 9-1.
Western Michigan is on the road for its next four games, three of those Mid-American Conference contests. The Broncos begin their road trip this Saturday at Florida Atlantic.
