Wieber Breaks Record and WMU Wins Five Events at EIU Twilight

CHARLESTON, Ill. -- The Western Michigan track and field team won five events at the Eastern Illinois University Twilight Meet on Friday night, in its final meet ahead of next weekend's Mid-American Conference Championship.

WMU claimed wins in the 200-meter dash, 4x100-meter relay, 4x400-meter relay, pole vault, and the triple jump. Leading the way was senior Kirstie Wieber after breaking her own program record in the outdoor pole vault. Wieber reached a height of 3.84m (12' 7.25") to break her previous mark of 3.82m (12' 6.25") set at the GVSU Last Chance Meet last May. She also automatically qualified for the MAC Championships after eclipsing the standard of 3.75m.

Fellow senior Diajah Ruffin had already secured her place in the MAC Championship in the triple jump but improved her ranking as she reached a personal-best distance of 12.21 (40' 0.75") to win the event. Ruffin also took second in the 400-meter dash after running a season-best time of 56.63 seconds.

Junior Naiomi Dulaney claimed the 200-meter dash title after running a time of 25 seconds flat. Dulaney also combined with Jade McKnight, Artia Gunn and Ayiana Gaines to run the team's best 4x100-meter relay time of the season at 46.03 seconds, also taking first place.

Ruffin, McKnight, Keyera Lige and Kaniya Weatherspoon also combined to win the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:50.50.

Freshman Allison Hufnagel turned in a new personal-best height in the high jump after reaching 1.60m (5' 3"). She also claimed third place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.21, finishing behind Lige, who took second with a time of 1:02.37.

Fellow freshman Riley Wilhelm turned in a new personal-best distance in the discus after throwing 43.12m (141' 06"), while Alex Ferguson turned in a season-best distance in the hammer throw at 48.19m (158' 1").

Western Michigan heads to the University of Toledo on Thursday for the 2016 Outdoor MAC Championships.
