KALAMAZOO, Mich. – After a rainout on Wednesday, the Western Michigan baseball is all set to hit the road for a three-game series with Mid-American Conference (MAC) opponent Miami this weekend.
The teams will square off at 6 p.m. on both Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7 and will finish out the series with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday, May 8. The Broncos come into this series at 13-26 overall and are 6-9 in the MAC, placing them in sixth right now. WMU has won each of its last two series and has won four of its last six games overall. The RedHawks come in at 21-22 overall and 10-5 in the MAC, placing them in fourth behind Kent State, Ball State and Northern Illinois.
As a team, the Broncos are batting .272, which is fourth in the MAC. Junior Grant Miller is batting a team-leading .312 and leads the team in hits (49) and RBI (24) and is second in doubles (7). Sophomore Evan Nelson is batting .304 and leads the team with three home runs and is tied with Miller for second in doubles. A surging freshman Connor Smith, who is batting .297, is hitting .514 (18-for-35) in his last eight games. He has six multiple hit games in his last eight, which includes a 5-for-6 with four RBI game against Toledo.
The pitching staff has a team ERA of 6.34 overall this season, but has been pitching well lately with a team ERA at 3.05 in their last six games. Junior Keegan Akin leads the team in ERA (1.77), innings (71.1), strikeouts (87) and opposing batting average (.197). Akin needs 13 strikeouts to pass Pat Misch's single season record of 99 strikeouts. Sophomore Jacob Piechota has been pitching well as of late, allowing just two earned runs in his last 10.2 innings. Sophomore Jake Bartels has also been pitching well, as he has not allowed a run in his last five outings (5.0 innings).
