HILLSDALE, Mich. -- Western Michigan track and field's Ayiana Gaines claimed two titles to highlight the final day of competition at the 50th annual Hillsdale Gina Relays on Saturday.
Gaines earned wins in the 100-meter dash championship race and the 200-meter dash championship race to go with her win in the open 400-meter hurdles on Saturday. In the 100 she turned in a time of 12.06 seconds, beating out two runners from Michigan State and Bronco track and field alum Iris Campbell, who ran unattached. Sophomore Naiomi Dulaney took fifth with a time of 12.35 seconds. In the 200 WMU placed three runners in the top seven. Gaines' time of 24.69 seconds claimed the top spot, while Dulaney took fourth with a time of 25.11 and Artia Gunn finished in seventh at 25.63.
In the 400-meter dash championship Western Michigan took third, fourth and sixth place. Senior Diajah Ruffin took third with a time of 57.06 seconds followed by sophomore Davonne Bolden at 57.42 seconds. Freshman Kaniya Weatherspoon took sixth at 58.01.
WMU also claimed the title in the 4x100-meter relay championship race with a time of 46.23 seconds. Jade McKnight, Dulaney, Gunn and Gaines combined to earn the title. Gunn also finished in fifth place in the 100-meter hurdle championship race after running a time of 14.50 seconds, while freshman Diana Holsey finished in seventh at 14.74 seconds.
The Broncos are back in action next week at the Eastern Illinois Last Chance Meet, their final meet before the 2016 Outdoor Mid-American Conference Championships beginning on May 12 at Toledo.
