KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Western Michigan women's soccer head coach Nate Norman has resigned to accept the head coaching position at Liberty University.
Norman was hired to take over the Bronco women's soccer program in July, 2012 and in his four seasons established the Broncos as one of the premier programs in the Mid-American Conference. Norman is the lone coach in program history to win two MAC Tournament Championships (2013, 2015) and appear in two NCAA Tournaments. He is also the only coach in program history to earn MAC Coach of the Year and National Soccer Coaches Association of American Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year.
"We want to thank Coach Norman for his tremendous contributions to our program," said WMU Director of Athletics Kathy Beauregard. "We have been extremely proud of our women's soccer team under Nate's leadership. Without question, Nate has developed our team and improved our overall program in his time as our Head Coach; we are very appreciative of these efforts and we certainly wish him well as he tackles new challenges at Liberty.”
Norman ends his tenure at Western Michigan with a 44-27-23 record overall, a 21-13-9 record in MAC play and a stunning 8-1 record in the MAC Tournament. In 2013 he coached the Broncos to the biggest upset in NCAA Women's College Cup history as WMU upset second-seeded Marquette. Under Norman student-athletes have earned All-MAC honors 15 times and have earned Academic All-MAC honors 43 times.
"I would first like to thank President Dunn, Kathy Beauregard and Dennis Corbin for giving me this opportunity four years ago to coach at Western Michigan," said Norman. "The support, guidance and freedom they gave me to run the soccer program allowed me to grow as a coach and a person. Most importantly I want to thank all of the student-athletes I had the privilege to coach. They were truly exceptional people. All of the success this program has had over the past four years is due to their hard work and leadership and I feel so fortunate that I was able to be on that journey with them. I will certainly miss all our players but I also know someone will get the opportunity to coach an amazing group of players, people and leaders."
A search for the new head coach will begin immediately.
